I live in vancouver british columbia where you learn to live with moss. That means 10 13cm of compost mulch around it every spring and autumn as well as perhaps a top dressing of bark mulch during the summer. Use soil test strips to find out what the soil ph is. Put a handful of moss in a blender along with a cup of buttermilk and a cup 453 5 gr of water.

Peat moss garden soil recently i started a square foot type garden and many of the books i ve read recommend using peat moss to improve the soil. Spreading moss if you have a rock garden or other place where transplanting won t work try spreading moss slurry on the proposed garden spot. Ps if the roof is visible you could even make a feature of it as a green roof by adding sedum sempervivum etc. I ve heard that there are issues.

A few weeks ago i read an article suggesting moss should go in your compost with other greens. A large tree needs a lot of organic matter to alter its soil. If you re planting in soil or over a flat surface make sure the surface is smoothed and totally flat. I do put it out for the city compost which gets extremely hot.

Moss prefers acidic soil with a ph between 5 0 and 6 0 so you may need to raise or lower the ph depending on your results. Test the soil for a ph between 5 0 and 6 0. Moss can serve as a soft green ground cover in the shady areas of your yard but if you don t like the look of moss or would rather have grass it s time to get rid of it. I have avoided putting it in my compost because it does not get all that hot.
