Rafter Roof Shed

Easy rafters is designed to calculate shed roofs that are framed to a ledger board nailed against a vertical wall not freestanding shed roofs supported by walls at both ends.

It is one of a series of sloped structural members that extend from the ridge or hip to the wall plate designed to support the roof deck and its associated loads. First cut your rafter boards to size using a circular saw to make sure they fit your roof. You then have rafters running down from this ridge board and resting on the top wall plates. You can use common rafters on any shed roof but they make the most sense when constructing a gable roof or lean to type shed roof where they can sit on or attach to top plates of a wall. A rafter or speed square will have marks for both of these angles.

The roof rafters provide integral structural support to the roof. The roof on this shed is a 4 in 12 slope which makes it a 18 and one half degree angle on the board ends. To build a shed roof you ll need rafter boards plywood gusset plates plywood sheathing felt roofing paper and shingles. Make a birdsmouth notch at the end of each rafter to help it fit into place.

You should use 2 4 rafters if you live in an area without heavy snow or wind loads. For most shed owners this is more than enough span for our backyard sheds.
